Industrial Designer

Full-time at Industrial Design Consultancy in Shanghai

What we do:
Industrial Design Consultancy (IDC) is an international product development company with offices in the United Kingdom and China. Our focus is product development in the medical, industrial, consumer and transport industries.

Our success with our clients — SMEs to multi-national corporations — is built on high-quality service, delivering creativity, innovation and technical excellence to create commercially successful and innovative products.

We are experiencing rapid growth in our business in China. To meet increasing demand, in May 2011 we opened a new studio in Shanghai. Situated in the desirable downtown Luwan district, the office undertakes industrial design and engineering development projects for Chinese and international clients. We need to build a team of the highest calibre.

The role:

We need an exceptional and experienced Industrial Designer to join our creative and energetic, multinational ID team in China. You will be responsible for your own design projects from end to end, working either independently or with other team members such as engineers. You will take your own creative lead as well as receiving guidance from the group’s Head of Industrial Design. As the team in the Shanghai office grows, the role would grow as well and we expect that you will be able to guide the creative talent of the team in Shanghai.

Working as part our international team of designers and engineers, the Industrial Designer will add to our creative problem-solving abilities in delivering effective design solutions. You will be joining the team in it’s infancy at a really exciting time, where you can help evolve and grow the company from 5 people to double that over the next 12 months and onwards. There may be opportunities for travel both domestically and internationally, and there will be regular collaboration with UK staff.

What we need from you:

You must be highly motivated and passionate about the creation of exceptional products. You must relish the challenge of working in a collaborative environment and possess an appetite for combining problem solving and rigour, with a deep empathy of user needs and outstanding skills with form and aesthetics.

You can see projects from concept to manufacture and must be able to manage the design process from end to end and champion the design intent throughout. You will work with others in this process and be responsible for the quality of your output as well as giving guidance and leadership to others. You will be responsible for nurturing excellent client relationships and delivering outstanding product designs on time and on budget.

Fluency with a sketchbook and 2D and 3D software and ability to articulate your ideas to the team and to clients in English and Mandarin are all essential.

You must have evidence of the following:
• Fluently bilingual in English to an outstanding level (and ideally Mandarin for foreign applicants)
• 3+ years’ experience in product design consultancy or in-house design teams
• A degree in Industrial or Product Design
• Project management, leadership and direction
• Experience with client relationships
• Ability to pitch and present projects to clients at the highest level
• Chinese and international experience
• Creative, self-motivated team member with strong communications skills
• Ability to manage time and meet deadlines whist maintaining world-class quality and having fastidious attention to detail
• A keen interest in current trends in design, lifestyle, technology, manufacturing processes and materials
• Good presentation and communication skills
• Strong skills in Adobe Creative Suite applications
• Strong 3D skills in at least one of the following: Rhino, SolidWorks or Pro/E
